Wilkins Chalgren Agar is used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics for anaerobic bacteria by the dilution method. Wilkins Chalgren Agar is also recommended for the isolation of anaerobic organisms from clinical specimens.

The formulation of Wilkins-Chalgren Anaerobic Agar contains yeast extract to provide vitamins and other growth factors such as purines and pyrimidines necessary for the proper growth of Peptostreptococcus anaerobius and Bacteroides melaninogenicus .
